Carnival History
Since the early 1970s, generations of Caribbean communities have come together in central Moss Side to celebrate culture, music, heritage, and solidarity. What began with just a few trucks and a small number of participants has blossomed into a vibrant, city wide festival, uniting Manchester through dance, performance, and shared celebration. Over the past 55 years, the carnival has grown into a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life, drawing tens of thousands of people each year to experience its unique energy.
The impact of Manchester Carnival goes far beyond the weekend festivities. With over 1,600 vendors, performers, and community participants, the event drives youth and community development while providing a major economic boost for local businesses. Spanning multiple days and attracting up to 65,000 attendees, the carnival is a true celebration of Manchester’s diversity, creativity, and enduring Caribbean heritage.
