Carnival’s youth development programme, Carnival X, developed five local global majority troupes with carnival costume workshops by renown carnival artists Pareesha Webster of Valentina Collective (Leeds). The programme employed 11 trainees, strengthening Manchester’s global majority cultural workers. 40 emerging artists performed to 58,000 people as 29 music and dance stage acts.
We strengthened our carnival parade quality by bringing 20 local and nationally significant troupes, bands and sound systems to our audience of 58,000 people at the carnival parade and park, and our opening j’ouvet parade. The carnival costumes were previewed to 340 people at the King and Queen culture day at Contact Theatre on the 26th July 2024.
We commissioned 26 local, national and internationally significant stage acts and sound systems for carnival.
In our survey 37% of the audience said they attended because of the atmosphere, and 33% because of the family day out with audiences commenting:
“Great music. Great atmosphere”
“Wonderful community aspect”
“Amazing every year I love everyone coming together”
“I love carnival it’s my culture”
We streamed and shared video content with a 94,000 strong digital audience from Manchester to the
Caribbean. The live stream was followed on the themanchestercarnival.com and Moss Side TV.
